How To: Root Your T-Mobile G1
This article explains in the simplest of terms how to root your G1. I learned how to do this through Koush on XDA-Developers.com
link. This is an abbreviated version of that article to be used as a reference guide for people who know what they're doing. I take no responsibility for anything this does to your phone, but in my experience, only good things happen.
Download
this, which contains everything you'll need.
Format your SD card to Fat32, and copy everything in the RC29 folder to it.
Turn your phone off. Hold the camera button, and press power (while still holding down camera) You should see a gray screen with instructions. Follow them.
Format your SD card to Fat32, and copy everything in HardSPL to it. Restart your phone.
If you don't have a data plan, click
here and follow the root, and turning on wifi :: section.
After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, then type "telnetd" and press enter. (Ignore anything that pops up.)
Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost. Type the following into Telnet, pressing enter after each line:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard
flash_image recovery recovery.img
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
Turn off your phone. Keep home held down, and press power. Press Alt + L, a menu should pop up. Press Alt + S. After the update finishes, press Home + Back to restart.
Format your SD card to Fat32, and copy everything in the RC33 folder to it.
(This is a repeat of what we just did. This is intentional) Turn off your phone. Keep home held down, and press power. Press Alt + L, a menu should pop up. Press Alt + W to wipe your phone. Press Alt + S. After the update finishes, press Home + Back to restart.
Now we install cupcake, bringing your phone up to date. Format your SD card to Fat32, and copy everything in the 151 folder to it. Keep home held down, and press power. Press Alt + L, a menu should pop up. Press Alt + W to wipe your phone. Press Alt + S. After the update finishes, press Home + Back to restart.
Lastly, the cupcake radio update: Format your SD card to Fat32, and copy everything in the 151/radio folder to it. Keep home held down, and press power. Press Alt + L, a menu should pop up. Press Alt + W to wipe your phone. Press Alt + S. After the update finishes, press Home + Back to restart.
